black spleenwort, black maidenhair Perennial with short rhizome. Fronds erect to arching, stipe initially paleate, lamina soft, narrowly deltoid, 2- or 3-pinnate, pinnae unequally cuneate, pinnules oblong, shallowly lobed to deeply pinnatifid, serrate to dentate, minutely paleate beneath. Sori linear, indusium entire. Cliffs and boulders, to 1500 m, NW, SW, KM, LB, SE (Gifberg to Eurasia, Mexico).
