Etymology of Babiana:
Unusual among South African plants in the name being derived from the vernacular Dutch, "baviaantjie", Afrikaans "bobbejaantjie" or its Cape corruption "babiaantjie". The baboon, bobbejaan, is partial to the corms.
Etymology of bakeri:
Named in honour of Colonel H. A. Baker; or the botanist John Gilbert Baker born on January 13, 1834, in Guisborough, England, the son of John and Mary (nêe Gilbert) Baker. Baker’s parents moved from Guisborough to Thirsk, Yorkshire, in 1834.
