Etymology of Babiana:
Unusual among South African plants in the name being derived from the vernacular Dutch, "baviaantjie", Afrikaans "bobbejaantjie" or its Cape corruption "babiaantjie". The baboon, bobbejaan, is partial to the corms.
Etymology of disticha:
From the Greek ‘di’ / ‘di’ meaning ‘two’; and the Greek ‘sticha’ / ‘stichos’ meaning ‘row’.The leaves are in two rows.

Cormous geophyte, 7--20 cm. Leaves lanceolate, hairy. Flowers zygomorphic, violet to pale blue, marked with yellow, fragrant, inner bracts free, ovary hairy. July--Sept. Sandstone slopes, NW, SW (Ceres to Cape Peninsula).
