Etymology of Babiana:
Unusual among South African plants in the name being derived from the vernacular Dutch, "baviaantjie", Afrikaans "bobbejaantjie" or its Cape corruption "babiaantjie". The baboon, bobbejaan, is partial to the corms.

Long etymology:
Cormous geophyte, 15--20 cm. Leaves linear, spirally coiled above. Flowers zygomorphic, windowed, dorsal tepal narrow, arcuate, blue or mauve with yellow markings, stamens arcuate. Aug.--Sept. Sandy flats and slopes, NW (Namaqualand to Klawer).
