Etymology of Babiana:
Unusual among South African plants in the name being derived from the vernacular Dutch, "baviaantjie", Afrikaans "bobbejaantjie" or its Cape corruption "babiaantjie". The baboon, bobbejaan, is partial to the corms.

Cormous geophyte, 6--10 cm, stems shorter than leaves. Leaves rigid, lanceolate, hairy, with thickened margins. Flowers zygomorphic, lower tepals clawed and united with upper laterals below, blue to mauve, inner bracts free, ovary hairy. June--July. Rocky sandstone slopes, NW (Bokkeveld Mts to Gifberg).
