Etymology of Babiana:
Unusual among South African plants in the name being derived from the vernacular Dutch, "baviaantjie", Afrikaans "bobbejaantjie" or its Cape corruption "babiaantjie". The baboon, bobbejaan, is partial to the corms.

Cormous geophyte to 8 cm, stem underground. Leaves cuneate, abruptly truncate, hairy. Flowers zygomorphic, mauve marked with pale yellow. July--Aug. Clay soils, renosterveld, NW (Namaqualand to Bokkeveld Plateau).
