Etymology of Brachystelma:
Gk. brachys = short; stelma = crown, garland, wreath; alluding to the short staminal corona of some species.
Etymology of meyerianum:
Likely referring to Ernst Heinrich Friedrich Meyer (1791-1858), a German botanist who collected in South Africa. Born in Hanover, he lectured in Göttingen and in 1826 became a professor of botany at the University of Königsberg, as well as Director of the Botanical Garden. His botanical specialty was the Juncaceae, the family of rushes.
