For Christoph Brasen (1738–1774), a Danish surgeon. He first met the Moravian missionaries in 1758 and later became the leader of the 1771 missionary expedition that established the Moravian mission of Nain on the coast of Labrador, the purpose of which was to convert the Inuit residents there to Christianity. He served as its first superintendent, his administrative skills, strong leadership, surgical expertise and scientific curiosity being highly valued. In 1774, while exploring the northern Labrador coast to establish a second mission post, he drowned during a fierce storm. The genus was named in 1789 by German naturalist and professor of natural history, Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber, who frequently received collected plant specimens from the Moravians, including those from Brasen.
