La. bulbus = an onion or bulb. A misnomer in that the plants do not have a bulbous base.

From the Latin ‘orchi’ / ‘orchis’ meaning ‘orchid’; and the Greek ‘oides’ / ‘oides’ meaning ‘in the form of’.
