For Edward Button (1836–1900), British geologist, explorer, gold prospector, mining pioneer, mine manager and amateur plant collector. He prospected in Natal from 1860–1864 as well as in the Transvaal from 1869–1871, discovering the Eersteling Gold Reef near Marabastad but mining operations were not successful because of difficulties with transport, labour and water supplies. In later years he was connected with the East Rand Gold Mines, Johannesburg. While in Natal in 1968, he collected plants, especially terrestrial orchids and seeds which were sent to Kew Gardens by Mark Johnstone McKen (1823–1872), horticulturalist, plant collector and sometime curator of the Natal Botanical Gardens.
