For Peder Claussen Friis (1545–1614), Norwegian parish priest and naturalist with an interest in Norway’s geography, history and ancient languages. During his lifetime he wrote on a wide range of subjects – topogeographical works, a chronology of Norwegian kings, and translations of various kinds. He collected texts of the ancient laws and ordinances which he translated, clerical works, old Norse sagas, and so on. It was only after his death that his writings received recognition. A considerable amount of Norway’s history and sagas was captured by Peder Claussen and in some cases is the only known record. He authored a natural history account, Description of Norway and Adjacent Islands, published posthumously in 1632.
