Etymology of Crassula:
La. crassus = thick; -ula = diminutive; referring to the fleshy succulent leaves.
Etymology of dewinteri:
Named in honour of botanist Bernard de Winter (1924-2017), director of the Botanical Research Institute which later became the South African National Biodiversity Institute. Grass and Cucurbitaceae expert and frequent traveller to Namibia, he collected some 9500 specimens.

Long etymology:
He was instrumental in implementing the Pretoria Computerised Information System (PRECIS) that formed the basis of curation throughout South Africa for four decades. His wife Mayda was also a botanist, but was forced to retire when Bernard became director. As the only person to work on the subgenus Mahernia (Malvaceae), he was mentor to David Gwynne-Evans, founder of CASABIO.org
