Etymology of Cynanchum:
Gk. kynos = a dog; anchein = to strangle or throttle. Some species of this genus are poisonous, and several species have climbers or twiners, hence the common name ‘dogbane’, a dog-strangling vine.
Etymology of capense:
From the Cape Province of South Africa, previously known as the Cape Colony. In the early days of exploration this epithet was frequently applied to anywhere in South or even Southern Africa.
