For Rolf Martin Theodor Dahlgren (1932–1987), a Swedish-born Danish botanist, plant collector and professor of botany at the University of Copenhagen from 1973–1987. In the 1950s and 1960s he visited South Africa, mainly the Cape, Natal, Transvaal and Zimbabwe, collecting over 5 000 species. He wrote extensively on plant systematics and cladistics. He developed a new, widely accepted system of Angiosperm classification, which is based upon many more characteristics than previous systems. It has instructive diagrams, called Dahlgrenograms. He authored The Families of the Monocotyledons: Structure, Evolution, and Taxonomy (1985) with Harold Trevor Clifford and Peter Yeo. In 1986 he was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
