Etymology of Dichrostachys:
Gk. dis- = two; chroos = colour; stachys = spike. The flower spikes are yellow and lilac (Hugh Glen); the upper bisexual flowers are yellow, the lower neuter flowers rosy-purple (Jackson); flowers have coloured staminodes (Don Perrin).

From the Latin arborea = 'tree-like', 'branching'.
