Etymology of Diospyros:
Gk. dios = divine; pyros = literally, a ‘grain of wheat’ but in this instance fruit. The fruits are ‘divine’ – edible and very tasty. This name was originally applied to the Caucasion persimmon, Diospyros lotus.

From the Latin austro = 'south' and africana = 'Africa'; i.e. from South Africa

Dioecious shrub to 3 m. Leaves subsessile, oblanceolate, velvety, felted beneath. Flowers solitary, axillary, cream, pink or red. Fruits shortly hairy. Aug.--Oct. Rocky flats and slopes, NW, SW, KM, LB, SE (Bokkeveld Mts to Cape Peninsula to Mpumalanga).
