Etymology of Donella:
La. donna = lady; -ella = diminutive, hence ‘little lady’ or donum = gift, hence ‘little gift’. Like many botanical authors, Jean Baptiste Louis Pierre described the genus but did not indicate the reason for giving it this name.

From the Latin viridis = 'green' and folius = 'leaf'
