Short etymology:
For Castor Durantes (1529–1590), Italian physician, botanist-herbalist and poet. He studied medicine at Perugia in 1567 and became a doctor to Gualdo Tadino and subsequently became physician to Pope Sixtus V. He authored De bonitate et vitio alimentorum centuria (The Treasure of Health) (1565) and his book Herbario Novo, focusing on preserving health and prolonging life, went through 11 editions and was still reprinted 130 years after his death. He started one of the earliest herbaria for medicinal plants from Europe and East and West Indies in Venice in 1584.
