For Heinrich Gustav Adolf (Adolf) Engler (1844–1930), German botanist, professor at the University of Berlin from 1889–1921 and director of the Berlin Botanical Gardens. After completing his PhD at the University of Breslau, he held various positions, including professorships at the universities of Kiel (1878–1884) and Breslau (1884–1888). He is recognised for his work on plant taxonomy and phytogeography; his major work being the 23-volume Die Natürlichen Pflanzenfamilien (The Natural Plant Families) (1887–1915), edited by Karl von Prantl, which he wrote with some notable experts, and which contained some 6 000 illustrations by Joseph Pohl. He was also founder and editor of the periodical Botanische Jahrbücher. He received the Linnaean Medal in 1913.
