Etymology of Fallopia:
For Gabriele Falloppio (1523–1562), Italian physician and surgeon and professor of anatomy, surgery and botany at the University of Padua (1551–1562). He was also superintendent of the university’s botanical gardens. A pioneering anatomist, he was the first to describe, among many discoveries, the semi-circular canals (chorda tympani) of the ear, the circular folds of the small intestine, and the inguinal band, later called Poupart’s ligament, the clitoris and what are now known as the Fallopian tubes, as well as the arteria profunda of the penis. Among his publications was Observationes anatomicae (1561), which contained many descriptions of his anatomical research. His collected works, Opera omnia, were published after his death, in Venice (1584) and Frankfurt (1600).
