Short etymology:
For Pierre Victor Adolphe Ferret (1814–1882), French brigadier-general and plant collector who led an adventurous expedition to Ethiopia (1839–1843). He went to Cairo for eight months to learn Arabic, took the pilgrim’s route to Mecca and eventually reached Abyssinia. He authored the three-volume work Voyage en Abyssinie dans les provinces du Tigré dú Samen et de l’Amhara (1847) with the French plant collector Joseph Germain Galinier (1814–1888), in which they describe their journey, what Abyssinia (Ethiopia) was like in the 19th century, and its geology and natural history. Later he was chief of staff in Oran province, Algeria (1866).
