Short etymology:
For Karl Joseph von Firmian (proper name Karl Gotthard von Firmian) (1716–1782), Austrian noble, politician and art collector. He studied at the University of Leiden and travelled extensively through France and Italy. In 1753, he was recruited by Francis I (1708–1765), king of the Holy Roman Empire, to become its ambassador to Naples and in 1756 minister plenipotentiary and governor-general of Lombardy, an area in northern Italy under Austro-Hungarian rule. He was an avid supporter of the arts and sciences. When he died he left a legacy of a library of 40 000 volumes and precious art collections.
