Etymology of Gasoul:
Possibly derived from the Arabic, ghasul = possibly a form of clay. Forrskål states that several plants were burnt for the barilla = soda ash (sodium carbonate) they contained, such as Mesembryanthemum geiticulatim and nodiflorum, both of which are called ghasul (rhassoul, ghassoul).
Etymology of nodiflorum:
From the Latin nodus = ‘knot’; and the Latin flora = ‘flower’.
