Gk. geisson = title; rhiza = root; alluding to the regular overlapping of the corm tunics in some species.

Cormous geophyte, 4--10 cm, corms often with a flat base, tunics woody, concentric. Leaves linear. Flowers 1--few per spike, bright yellow, tepals spreading. Aug.--Oct. Mostly clay flats and lower slopes, NW, SW, LB, SE (Cedarberg Mts to Humansdorp).
