Etymology of Gethyllis:
Possibly Gk. getheo = I rejoice; ullus = diminutive, but most sources say from gethyon = a bulb, onion or species of leek. The bulbs of this genus are somewhat similar to those of the leek.

Bulbous geophyte, 10--20 cm. Leaves dry at flowering, suberect, spiralled, fringed with long hairs, basal sheath minutely spotted. Flowers white or pink, anthers more than 6. Dec.--Feb. Flats, NW, SW (Namaqualand to Cape Peninsula).
