Etymology of Gethyllis:
Possibly Gk. getheo = I rejoice; ullus = diminutive, but most sources say from gethyon = a bulb, onion or species of leek. The bulbs of this genus are somewhat similar to those of the leek.

Bulbous geophyte to 25 cm. Leaves dry at flowering, suberect, twisted, with undulate margins fringed with long hairs. Flowers large, white, anthers more than 6. Dec.--Jan. Sandy flats, NW, SW (Clanwilliam to Malmesbury).
