For Johann Gottlieb Gleditsch (Gleditsius) (1714–1786), German botanist and author on forestry. He obtained his PhD from the University of Frankfurt/Oder (1742) and taught botany, physiology and medical botany. In 1746 he moved to Berlin and became a professor of forestry and botany at the Collegium Medico-chirurgicum and became director of the Berlin botanical garden (1746). He was the author of Systematische Einleitung in der Neuere Forstwissenschaft (Systematic Introduction to the New Forestry) (1774–1775). He belonged to the German Anti-Linnaean ‘school’ and developed a ‘natural’ system to describe plants, Système des Plantes, Fondé sur la Situation et la Liaison des Etamines (System of Plants, Based on the Situation and the Binding of Stamens) (1751).
