For Georg Ludwig Engelhard Krebs (1792–1844), German apothecary, one of the most prolific botanical and zoological collectors of his era, naturalist to the King of Prussia. He came to South Africa in 1817. During the next 21 years he went on 14 expeditions, mainly in the Eastern Cape, and to the north as far as the Orange River, and also to Natal. He also went to Madagascar, Mauritania and Réunion. He sent his collections to Martin Heinrich Karl Lichtenstein, director of the Berlin Natural History Museum – his 12th consignment contained 7 245 dried plant specimens, a quagga (now extinct), a rhinoceros, an elephant, 900 birds, over 7 000 insects, and a preserved ‘Bushman’ (Khoisan). He was recommended to receive the Prussian Order of the Red Eagle for meritorious contributions to science but died before the award could be made.
