Etymology of Gomphocarpus:
Gk. gomphos = a peg, nail, club; karpos = fruit; referring to the fruits that are swollen and eggshaped with tapering tips (John Manning).
Etymology of woodii:
Named after John Medley Wood (1827-1915) farmer, trader and botanist in Kwa-Zulu Natal, curator of Durban Botanic Garden from 1882 and founder of the Natal Herbarium
