Etymology of Hallia:
For Birger Mårten Hall (1741–1815), Swedish botanist and physician who studied medicine at Uppsala University under Linnaeus, then spent four years abroad (1755–1759), mainly in Germany, to further his medical studies. He returned to Uppsala, where he obtained a PhD in 1762 for his work on the presence of honey glands in flowers. From 1764 Hall worked at the university hospital in Uppsala (Nosoconium academicum), obtaining his surgical degree in 1768. He was appointed district medical officer in Västerås in 1773, a post he held for 20 years before retiring because of illness in 1793 aged 53. His legacy included a collection of medieval coins and banknotes, manuscripts, an extensive medicine and science library and a large insect collection and herbarium.
