For Thomas Hardwicke (1755–1833), English military officer, ornithologist, naturalist and zoologist. He joined the British East India Company in 1777 and retired in 1823 as a major general in the Bengal Artillery. During his career he travelled extensively over the subcontinent, visiting the Cape and Mauritius and collecting mainly zoological specimens. He also amassed the largest collection of drawings of Indian animals ever formed by a single individual; these were drawn by Indian artists trained to make technical illustrations using water colours. His collection, some 4 500 illustrations, was bequeathed to the British Museum in 1835. He corresponded with the leading naturalists in England and was made a Fellow of both the Royal and Linnaean societies.
