Etymology of Helichrysum:
Gk. (h)elios = sun; chrysos = gold; referring to the bright yellow flowerheads of many of the flowers of species in this genus.
Etymology of foetidum:
Latin, from Greek helikhrusos, from helix ‘spiral’ + khrusos ‘gold’. It originally denoted a yellow-flowered plant, possibly Helichrysum stoechas .

Robust, foetid, glandular-hairy biennial to c. 1 m. Leaves oblong-lanceolate, auriculate and clasping, roughly hairy above, grey-woolly beneath. Flower heads disciform, in leafy corymbs, depressed-globose, yellow to cream, 15--25 mm diam., florets c. 400--800, ovary glabrous. Oct.--May. Damp rocky slopes, NW, SW, KM, LB, SE (Cedarberg Mts to E Cape).
