Short etymology:
Gk. hippos = a horse; bromos = a kind of smelly oat; referring to unpleasant smelling aromatic leaves. The common name for this genus, in the US at least, is horsewood, but the more descriptive Afrikaans common name is perdepis, meaning horse urine.
