For Christian Caius (Cayus) Lorenz Hirschfeld (1742–1792), German philosopher, professor of aesthetics at Kiel University, best known for his magnum opus, the five-volume Theorie der Gartenkunst (Theory of Garden Art) (1779–1785), comprising 1 300 pages and 250 illustrations, translated in French as Théorie de l’Art des Jardins. This work discusses all aspects of the garden – design, aesthetics, structure, functionality linked to locality, etc. and all garden types including public and cemetery gardens. He also wrote two other books on the design of landscape gardens, Anmerkungen über die Landhäuser und die Gartenkunst (Notes on Country Houses and Garden Design) (1773) and Theorie der Gartenkunst (Theory of Garden Design) (1775).
