Etymology of Hoodia:
Probably for Dr William Chamberlain Hood (1790–1879), British surgeon who lived in South Lambeth, London, and collected succulents.
Etymology of mossamedensis:
Named after the locality of the species, Mossamedes (Namibe), on the south-west coast of Angola. Mossamedes also occurs in Brazil.
