Short etymology:
For Thomas Hoy (c 1750–1822), English botanist and gardener to the Duke of Northumberland, a position he held for 40 years. He became a Fellow of the Linnaean Society in 1788. He often presented flowering plants to the Linnaean society. These included the Australian plants Acacia suaveolens, Acacia myrtifolia and Goodenia ovata. Robert Brown (1773–1858) named the plant genus in his honour, describing Hoy as someone ‘whose merits as an intelligent and successful cultivator have been long known to the botanists of this country’ (Wikipedia.org is the only source available on the internet).
