Etymology of Hypolaena:

Gk. hypo- = beneath; chlaina = a blanket; alluding to the fruit, much of which is covered by the perianth.

Etymology of schlechteri:

Named in honour of the German Rudolf Schlecter (1872-1925) and his brother Max (1874-1960), renowned plant collectors from South Africa.
