Ancient Gk. Ixia = a Linnaeus-derived name for a plant noted for the variability of its flower colour or Gk. ixos = mistletoe (viscum), birdlime; referring to the viscous sap (WPU Jackson).

Cormous geophyte, 20--50 cm, corms with stolons. Leaves sword-shaped, bracts large, truncate and rusty. Flowers orange to yellow with dark star-like centre, tube filiform, filaments united below. Sept.--Oct. Granite and sandstone flats and slopes, mostly fynbos, NW, SW (Clanwilliam to Melkbos, extinct on Cape Peninsula).
