Short etymology:
Possibly after St James (Jacobus), one of the 12 apostles, because the plant flowers around St Jacobs day, July 25. The phrase ‘conditio Jacobaea’ means ‘If the Lord wills it’. The author may have had in mind that this ragwort plant was only tolerated as part of God’s will. St James is usually depicted as an older man with grey or greying hair and somewhat unkempt beard. The plant’s leaves and stems are covered with long, thinly to thickly matted grey-white to white hairs.
