Etymology of Jacobsenia:
For Hermann Johannes Heinrich Jacobsen (1898–1978), German botanist and algologist, a specialist in succulent plants who was curator of the Kiel Botanical Garden (1929–1963). Among other achievements, he built, with Gustav Schwantes, one of the largest collections of Mesembryanthemum (Aizoaceae) plants. He was a prolific author and wrote numerous horticultural and botanical books (some translated to English) as well as many articles. Two of his invaluable reference works are A Handbook of Succulent Plants (1960) and Lexicon of Succulent Plants (1974). He was a founding member of the International Organisation for Succulent Plant Study; vice-president of the African Plant Society and a member of the Cactus and Succulent Society of Great Britain, among others. He was elected Fellow of the Linnaean Society of London in 1974 and received a Cactus and Succulent Society of America Fellow Award in 1971.
