Etymology of Jacquemontia:
For Venceslas Victor Jacquemont (1801–1832), French natural historian and botanist, explorer and plant collector for the Royal Museum of Paris. Jacquemont’s travels took him from France to the United States, Haiti, and finally India in 1828. For over three years, he travelled extensively from Calcutta (now Kolkata) to Delhi and Lahore gathering plants, minerals, making animal sketches and conducting field surveys. He reached the Himalayas, where he made many early descriptions of (Alpine Himalayan) Indian flora. He also made an incursion into Tibet and China before returning to Delhi. He died of amoebic fever in a military hospital in Bombay in 1832 aged 31. The story of his travels in India was published by the French government under the title Letters from India in 1835.
