Etymology of Kalaharia:
Tswana Kgala = the great thirst, or Khalagari, Kgalagadi or Kalagare, meaning ‘a waterless place’. This is the name for a desert in southwestern Africa, mainly Botswana.
Etymology of spinescens:
From the Latin spina = 'spine', 'thorn', 'prick' or 'prickle' and -escens = 'becoming like'; i.e. the thorns are incompletely formed
