Etymology of Lannea:
This name is derived from lanné = native name of the plant in Senegal and/or Gambia. Palmer suggests La. lana = wool; referring to the dense woolly hairs that cover the young parts of the tree or the roots of some species.

From the Latin glabra = 'smooth', and -escens, becoming, i.e. tending towards almost smooth or bald
