Etymology of Lannea:
This name is derived from lanné = native name of the plant in Senegal and/or Gambia. Palmer suggests La. lana = wool; referring to the dense woolly hairs that cover the young parts of the tree or the roots of some species.
Etymology of kirkii:
Named after Sir John Kirk (1832-1922), a Scottish physician, naturalist, and botanist who explored and collected plants in East Africa.
