Etymology of Littonia:
For Samuel Litton (1781–1847), Irish physician, professor of botany in Dublin (Glasnevin), librarian of the Royal Dublin Society and honorary fellow of the College of Physicians. He was a collector of Irish flowering plants and ferns, which he obtained from the west of Ireland (unknown date) and Dublin and Wicklow counties (both in 1842). This collection is housed in the herbarium of the National Botanical Gardens, Glasnevin, and Dublin.

From the Latin rigida / rigidus meaning ‘rigid’ and -folius 'leaf'
