Gk. lobos = lobe; stemon = thread, stamen; referring to the filaments being opposite the corolla lobes.
Etymology of obovatus:
From the Latin ob- = 'in opposite' and ovatus = ‘egg-shaped’; i.e. the narrow side is on the side of the stalk
