Short etymology:
Gk. lukos = a wolf; persikon = a peach. Originally the name of an Egyptian plant, the word was later re-used for the tomato. Georg Christian Wittstein suggests that the significance is that a ‘wolf’s peach’ is a conspicuous fruit that looks better than it tastes.
