Gk. machaira = dagger, sabre, sword; phyllon = leaf; referring to the dagger-shaped leaves.

From the Latin lati / latus meaning ‘wide’; and folius meaning ‘leaf’; i.e. the plant is broad-leafed

Tufted perennial to 3 cm. Leaves 4--6 per branch, pale bluish, almost as wide as long. Flowers on pedicels c. 12 mm long, yellow, to 30 mm diam. Feb. Stony slopes, KM (Little Karoo: Oudtshoorn).
