Etymology of Melothria:
Gk. melon = apple, but also the generic name for all fruits; thrion = a certain food. In ancient times this classical name was for a different plant, probably Bryonia. Georg Christian Wittstein states that this cucurbit is very similar to B. cretica.
Etymology of cinerea:
From the Latin cinereus meaning 'relating to ashes' or 'ash-coloured' referring to the greyish colour of the leaves.
