Etymology of Mesembryanthemum:
Gk. mesos = in the middle, between; embryon = fruit (embryo); anthemon = flower. The flowers need mid-day sunshine to open.
Etymology of beetzii:
Named after Dr Werner Beetz, a geologist with Consolidated Diamond mines, who sent plants to Professor Moritz Kurt Dinter for further study.
